Since the Industrial Revolution, the global population has skyrocketed, thanks to medical breakthroughs and improved agricultural productivity. One of humanity’s biggest challenges now is figuring out how to produce food more efficiently to meet the growing demand. One Swedish company recently found an innovative way of implementing modern technology with popular demand.
Launched in 2019, Swegreen’s unique take on hydroponics has earned them numerous awards. Hydroponics is a cutting-edge technology that addresses the challenges of water scarcity and limited agricultural land. In hydroponics, plants grow in a nutrient-rich water solution, proving that soil isn’t necessary for growth. Most plants just need a medium for the roots, water, oxygen, and nutrients. This method maximizes space efficiency, enabling plants to grow in compact arrangements or even vertically. With roots submerged in oxygen-rich water, producers can precisely supply nutrients to meet the plants' needs.
SweGreen Growing Station
SweGreen recognized that today’s consumers want to know where their food comes from and how it's produced. With hydroponics being so versatile, they came up with a brilliant solution: setting up growing stations directly in supermarkets. Currently, the stations can grow 100 different produce, including lettuce, dill, mint and parsley.
This allows customers to select fresh vegetables and herbs right on the spot, watching them be harvested and packaged in real-time. To streamline the process, SweGreen incorporated AI into its growing systems. The AI sends the supermarket staff daily to-do lists, ensuring that only the necessary products are produced. This "on-site" growing method not only cuts transport costs but also extends the shelf life of the produce. You can already find SweGreens growing stations in 17 locations across Sweden and Germany.
