Story 1: Violent Crime Rates Drop In The United States

US citizens concerned about a perceived rise in crime
Latest data shows that violent crimes have decreased
Murder rates dropped nearly 12% between 2022 and 2023
Violent crimes have decreased 49% since 1993
Since 2021, there has been a growing concern among the citizens of the USA regarding crime rates. A survey done in January 2024 revealed that every 6 in 10 US adults believed that reducing crime should be the presidency’s top priority, and as the image below illustrates, this sentiment is shared by both Democrats and Republicans alike.
However, the latest data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) shows that not only has violent crime dropped in the US, but there has also been a dramatic decline in murders since 2022 (as shown below). And while this data only reflects 85% of all law enforcement agencies in the states, it covers more than 95% of the population and involves 14 million criminal offenses reported in 2023.
US Murders and Murder Rate / FBI and City Data
Based on the data for 2023, murder and non-negligent manslaughter saw an estimated nationwide decrease of nearly 12% compared to 2022. Both national violent crime and aggravated assaults declined around 3% in 2023. These numbers are significant, as they debunk claims made by some American politicians that crime rates in the country are on the rise. Furthermore, the long term data shows that the overall violent crime rate has dropped an incredible 49% since 1993, even though that decline hasn’t always been steady.
While there is no clear reason as to why violent crime rates have gone down, the FBI cites factors like population density and economic conditions as the main influences here. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an uptick in violent crimes all over the country, which might indicate that people are simply returning to their normal lives again, with less stressors to deal with. Government spending on public safety could also be a factor at play. Many experts, however, say that it’s simply too early to deduce why these numbers are going down, only that it’s a good thing.
